Book review: The Pharmacist of Auschwitz: The Untold Story

Image
This book is a non-fiction book that is introducing the life of Dr. Victor Capesius, one of the pharmacists in the Auschwitz during World War 2.  The book is very well written, referencing a lot of further articles and studies on the WW2 theme; introducing also the most important companies of the period and how they affected the entire war. It deals with both youth of Capesius, his role in Auschwitz and crimes he partake in during WW2 in Auschwitz as retold by survivors and witnesses as well as the post war years. Large portion of the book introduces the trials of post war years with many of SS key figures, followed by actual photos referencing many of the important events.  As a first book I read that in detail introduced the post war trials, it was very captivating to read. Majority of the books I read were solely focused on the issues in concentration camps, but failed to introduce the injustice that was still present in the following years. After reading this book, ...

Recommended: Shirley (2020)

My rating: 8/10 Any fan of horror stories is probably familiar with Shirley Jackson. Her writings are, in my opinion, true masterpieces when it comes to horror books. Thus I was very excited to watch this film.

Review: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)

Image
I had wondered how the lives of characters from my favorite Beetlejuice (1988)  movie would have developed before the new  Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  was announced. So of course, I needed to see it asap and it gave me all the answers I needed as it was not a remake but continuation of the original story. A lot of the scenes in the movie are references to the previous one so you might want to watch the og Beetlejuice  so you would understand the relationships between the characters better. 8/10

Review: Scream (2022)

Image
Rating: 8/10 I mean, I was never really a huge fan of Scream movies so I got to watching this one with not really high expectations and this might be my favorite one of the films. Not differentiating too much in the basics from the previous movies, still it is good enough to watch and here is why.

Review: Hereditary (2018)

Rating: 7/10 I am glad I have not watched a trailer of this film, that way it remained mysterious and strange.

Review: Train to Busan (2016)

My rating: 9 One of the best zombie horror films of all times, even after rewatching it many times.

Review: Get Out (2017)

Image
My rating: 6 The film is very interesting to watch, with quite an original idea that was not developed that well within the plot.

Review: Lights Out (2016)

Image
My rating: 7 One of the better ghost stories. But ffs stop making kids say all this deep shit... no one is buying it.  Lights Out is surprisingly ... unpleasant to watch. Even though it is basically all what we've seen so far withing the subgenre with just a bit of an original concept, it is still quite a good horror film.  It feels very similar to The Ring, maybe because the ghost or demonic entity is portrayed in a similar way - an evil girl who got murdered, the psychiatric ward pictures, etc.  The portrayal of the entity itself was very well done and Diana is really scary to look at, that is mostly because she is this person we cannot clearly see and who is always hiding in the shadows. This makes your mind go on and further imagine what she possibly looks like (which eventually gets ruined in the second half of the film as you get to see her clearly - not a good idea). We also get some jump scares, which to my own surprise were working for me. The idea with focusing ...

Review: Haunt (2019)

Image
My rating: 8 A better slasher film. Honestly, Haunt is one of the best slasher films I have seen in a while. The plot itself is relatively simple though with some unexpected twists, the characters are not too stupid (which is rare) and I think the cast was a right choice for this one.
