Review: Scream (2022)

Rating: 8/10

I mean, I was never really a huge fan of Scream movies so I got to watching this one with not really high expectations and this might be my favorite one of the films. Not differentiating too much in the basics from the previous movies, still it is good enough to watch and here is why.

What took me by surprise the most was probably all the working jumpscares which other slasher films frequently omit, or the overall mood of the film causes that they do not work in other films. In Scream, however, the directors are even trolling the audience with one particular scene where a future victim is walking through the entire house and where they managed to create enough tension and work with setting so well you do expect jumpscares every other second. A great advantage of this film is also that it includes enough gore scenes and these are very well presented and uneasy to watch.

We also get to see the survivors from previous movies who come back to help fight the killer. Despite that, there is a ton of not very logical decisions made and these survivors fail to actually become the sort of heroes you would expect them to become and they seem very vulnerable (which makes it more authentic in some ways I guess). The part that pisses me off the most however was that it took forever for police reinforments to arrive even though it was the sherriff who requested them and they knew there is this a murderer out there. Also why did the sherriff have no gun with her especially in the US?

The actual movie length (almost two hours) leaves more room for the unimportant scenes, but there were none that would actually disrupt the main plot. The film is interesting. It includes many funny and witty parts in dialogues, but it also shows various hints as to who could be the killer and eventually you suspect everyone.  I had my suspicion which clearly was wrong based on which the final plot twists remained unexpected till the last scenes along with the motive of crazy fandoms, which even though was unexpected was also not very believable and after the final reveal, you really are left with doubting that the killer could actually overpower their victims.

I still do recommend this film.
