Review: Hereditary (2018)

 Rating: 7/10

I am glad I have not watched a trailer of this film, that way it remained mysterious and strange.

Hereditary is a very slow film, with a predominantly dark and tense mood which slowly gradates as the plot is explained. Despite the length of the film, the timing of the strange twists is well chosen and set, this helps the film to keep your focus on the story. The story is what we have already seen, but yet seems like a something new because of the odd way it is presented. The final twists are not really surprising, and I must admit that even though the entire film was well made and also made sense, the ending did not really fit the film as you would expect the film go darker visually due to the previous gradation. The end of the film was also not portrayed well visually and final effects seemed awkward rather than creepy. Honestly, this ruined the film for me.

The cast was well chosen, and acting quite alright as the characters. The way characters were portrayed tried to blur the borders between mental illness and supernatural at first, so to make the audience unsure on which one from these themes is the basis for the plot.¨

Overall, film is very authentically portrayed, and this makes it so unsettling. It is not really scary in the typical ghost story way, but thrilling, dark and revealing its mysteries well. A good one to watch, indeed.
