Review: The Purge: Election Year (2016)

My rating: 7

It gets surprisingly interesting to watch, especially considering the situation that has been going on in the US last couple of weeks.

The Purge: Election Year is an action film. It is way too different from the first film in the movie series, yet it still presents the concept of purge as shown in the previous ones. It is no longer a thrilling home invasion piece, and presenting only few disturbing scenes it quite lacks the horror elements that could have easily been brought in.

I still liked the overall idea and that with this movie, all restrictions considering purge were canceled. The plot develops around a politician who becomes target of this years purge precisely because she wants to stop it. Well yeah, not the most original idea to come up with, but it is not annoyingly stupid either. Especially because there is always something going on which also compensates for the not very surprising plot twists.

Characters are interesting, the acting performances are not bad. What seems to be a bit off are the dialogues, sometimes they seem really unauthentic and honestly, I would never believe someone goes on talking the same way as Joe does.

Still, this film is a bit better than the average.

Horror: 1 | Action: 8 | Originality: 6
