Review: Gretel & Hansel (2020)

My rating: 3

Visually striking, but pushing hard on the feminist note.

The strongest aspect of this film is the good visuals it presents. The cabin and its surroundings really just feel somewhat magical. Also the costumes are very well done.

Personally, I do not mind horror fairytales, but even so this film was just not something I would enjoy due to lack of the horror elements. It was trying really hard to be serious with the nothing-is-free idea and approach the story of Hansel and Gretel in an original way but in my opinion the overall result was more cringy than anything else (and I felt like it was promoting neo feminism and killstar nu goth wave way too hard).

There were some scenes that had no meaning as far as the plot development was concerned (for instance there is a hunter in the woods scene that feels somehow unnecessary, and in general these scenes that are meant to be underlining how dangerous the world is did not really fit in).
Overall, if you are looking for a good scare, this film will certainly not be that enjoyable.

It examines the supernatural and attempts to further inspect the fight between the good and the evil within a human who is confronted with a possibility of obtaining great power and the sacrifice that would be necessary to make to obtain it as nothing comes for free. Overall, these and even further ideas seems to be presented to the viewer but none is examined in enough depth and eventually film lacks some essential part that would somehow merge all the ideas and gave them one clear meaning, in my opinion of course.
